Transcript of letter from Seaford Town Council to WHC, 10/9/01

The Chief Executive, Westminster Care, Bushey House , High Street , Bushey, Herts

10 September 2001

Dear Sir or Madam:

Subject: Kings Mead School Chapel, Kings Mead, Seaford

I am sure you will be aware that there are a number of concerns being expressed in Seaford regarding the future of St Mary's Nursing Home and in particular the chapel.

I appreciate that at this stage there is no planning application being passed to this Council for comment, but I would welcome your thoughts on your long-term intentions regarding the chapel together with the historic artefacts inside. I am sure you appreciate the history of the memorial stones within the chapel and the sad stories associated with the layi"stones. I enclose a current press cutting the loca1 newspaper, together with a much earlier newspaper article relating to the dedication service for the original memorial windows.

There have been various rumours circulating within the town that the chapel is to be demolished and that some of the stones will be distributed to places such as Seaford Museum. I do hope you agree that, given the historical importance of this site, that rather than see it demolished it would be better to somehow incorporate it into any new development on the site, and have it restored.

There is a tremendous amount of public interest in this site and our local MP Mr Norman Baker is now involved. It would be helpful therefore if you could advise us of your intentions for the site so that we may perhaps allay peoples fears.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Len Fisher Town Clerk Seaford Town Council
